With women comprising just {{ statPct }}% of composers performed worldwide, and remaining underrepresented in positions of musical leadership, the contours of the concert experience itself remain unevenly drawn. We aim to bridge this gap, one programme, one podium, one season at a time.

Our mission

Women's Symphonia was founded in response to the quiet imbalances that shape classical music, heard not only in what is performed, but in who writes the music, who stands before the orchestra, and who is given the authority to shape its sound.

Our mission

“[I] want to show the world, as much as I can as a musician, the mistake that men make in thinking that they alone possess the gifts of intelligence and that such gifts are never given to women.”

Maddalena Casulana · circa 1544 – circa 1590

Women's Symphonia was founded in response to the quiet imbalances that shape classical music, found not only in what is performed, but in who writes the music, who stands before the orchestra, and who is given the authority to create its sound.

Bringing together outstanding recently graduated and conservatoire musicians, the orchestra seeks to become a shared space of artistic imagination and responsibility. Young performers shape music collectively and step into it with urgency and brilliance. Creating performances that feel alive and newly possible.

The founder

Freya McGrath

Freya McGrath is an Australian-born trumpet player studying BMus at Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London. Having performed at venues including the Sydney Opera House and the Barbican, she founded Women's Symphonia out of a belief that the future of classical music is shaped by collaboration, opportunity, and exceptional musicianship — and is passionate about bringing outstanding women together to celebrate overlooked repertoire while helping to redefine the orchestral canon for future generations.
